AI Search Citation Changes in Aug 2026: What Singapore Businesses Need to Know About Reddit, GEO and the New Authority Stack

For years, marketers were told that Reddit was one of the most powerful sources for AI visibility.

That advice was not without evidence. In March 2026, an analysis of 30 million AI-search sources found Reddit to be the most-cited domain across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, followed by YouTube and LinkedIn.

Then something changed.

In August 2026, Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations suddenly collapsed by approximately 86%.

For businesses investing in SEO, content marketing and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), particularly in Singapore, this is more than a Reddit story. It is a warning about how fragile AI-search strategies can be when they depend too heavily on a single platform.

The Reddit → ChatGPT change: what actually happened?

According to Promptwatch data reported by Search Engine Land, Reddit accounted for approximately 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations between July 18 and August 7, 2026.

From August 14–17, that figure fell to approximately 0.52% — an 86.4% relative decline in only a few days.

The timing is particularly interesting because the decline appears to have coincided with a change in how ChatGPT was conducting web searches. Reports indicate that ChatGPT began using site: searches much more heavily, changing how it retrieves information from individual domains.

However, there is an important distinction:

OpenAI has not publicly announced that it has “banned” or deliberately removed Reddit from ChatGPT Search.

The data demonstrates a dramatic change in citation frequency, but it does not conclusively establish the underlying cause. Axios also noted that the reason for the decline was not identified.

Therefore, saying:

“ChatGPT no longer cites Reddit.”

is inaccurate.

A more defensible statement is:

“Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations has fallen dramatically since mid-August 2026.”

That distinction matters.

Why Reddit became so important to AI search

Reddit has something traditional corporate websites often lack:

first-hand human experience.

If someone asks:

  • “Is this restaurant actually worth visiting?”
  • “Which skincare product works?”
  • “What’s the best neighbourhood to stay in Singapore?”
  • “Has anyone used this service?”
  • “Is this company legitimate?”
  • “What’s the real experience with this product?”

A corporate website can tell you what the company claims.

Reddit can provide what people experienced.

That made Reddit particularly useful for AI systems trying to answer recommendation and experience-based queries.

This was also why marketers increasingly started targeting Reddit for GEO.

And that created another problem.

The Reddit GEO gold rush created its own problem

As marketers realised that AI engines were frequently citing Reddit, brands and agencies started deliberately trying to place brand mentions into Reddit discussions.

That has now become controversial.

The Verge recently reported growing concerns about AI-driven spam and stealth marketing on Reddit, with brands attempting to influence AI-generated search results through seemingly organic discussions. Reddit communities and moderators have responded by tightening anti-spam measures.

This creates a paradox:

Reddit became valuable because AI perceived it as authentic.

But once marketers began manufacturing Reddit conversations for AI visibility, that authenticity became less reliable.

So the recent decline in ChatGPT citations should not automatically be interpreted as:

“Reddit is no longer valuable.”

It may instead indicate a broader evolution in how AI systems evaluate and retrieve information.

The bigger lesson: AI citation is not the same as Google ranking

Traditional SEO gives marketers a relatively familiar framework:

keyword → page → ranking → click

GEO is different:

query → retrieval → source selection → synthesis → citation

And the retrieval layer can change without warning.

A page can remain indexed.

A Reddit thread can remain popular.

A website can retain its backlinks.

Yet the AI may simply stop selecting that source as frequently.

That is exactly why the recent Reddit development is important.

Your GEO strategy cannot simply be:

“Get mentioned on Reddit.”

It needs to be:

“Build enough authority and corroborating evidence across the web that multiple AI systems can independently discover, understand and validate the entity.”

So where are AI engines citing from now?

There is no single universal ranking because ChatGPT, Google, Gemini and Perplexity have different retrieval systems and source preferences.

Earlier 2026 research found Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and Forbes among the most-cited domains across major AI search engines.

Other research has shown YouTube becoming particularly important on Google AI surfaces; Profound’s January 2026 data, for example, ranked YouTube as the most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews and Gemini.

This gives us a more useful way of thinking about AI sources.

1. Primary sources

Your own website, official documentation and original data.

Why they matter:
They establish what the company itself says and provide information AI systems can extract directly.

2. Search and knowledge ecosystems

Google, Google Business Profile, Maps, Knowledge Graph-related signals and other structured information.

Why they matter:
They help establish the existence, identity and attributes of an entity.

3. Authoritative third parties

Government websites, universities, major publications, established industry publications and recognised organisations.

Why they matter:
They provide independent corroboration.

4. Experience-based platforms

Reddit, YouTube, review platforms, forums and social platforms.

Why they matter:
They provide consumer experience, opinions and demonstrations.

5. Professional/social authority

LinkedIn, industry communities, professional publications and expert profiles.

Why they matter:
They help establish expertise and topical authority.

What does this mean specifically for Singapore?

This is where the strategy becomes more interesting.

A Singapore business does not necessarily need to compete globally for mentions on Forbes or Reddit.

It needs to become recognisable as a Singapore entity within the relevant topic ecosystem.

For example, imagine someone asks:

“What are the best SEO agencies for SMEs in Singapore?”

An AI engine needs to determine:

  1. Does this company actually exist?
  2. Is it actually based in Singapore?
  3. Does it provide SEO?
  4. Does it work with SMEs?
  5. Is there evidence of its expertise?
  6. Do independent sources mention it?
  7. Do customers discuss it?
  8. Is its information consistent across the web?

That means Singapore GEO should be thought of as entity authority, not simply keyword ranking.

Singapore-focused GEO practitioners similarly emphasise entity signals, Google Business Profile, structured data, reviews, answer-focused content and mentions on trusted websites.

The Singapore AI Authority Stack

For a Singapore business, I would structure the strategy roughly like this:

Tier 1 — Foundation

Your website

→ About page
→ Services
→ Location pages
→ Author/expert information
→ FAQs
→ Case studies
→ Original research/data
→ Structured data

The website remains the source of truth.

Tier 2 — Local entity verification

Google ecosystem

→ Google Business Profile
→ Google Maps
→ Reviews
→ consistent business name
→ Singapore address
→ phone number
→ opening hours
→ business categories

This helps AI understand:

Who are you? Where are you? What do you do?

For local businesses, that entity layer is extremely important.

Tier 3 — Singapore authority

This is where Singapore-specific publications become useful.

Depending on the industry, this could include:

  • CNA
  • The Straits Times
  • TODAY
  • Mothership
  • Vulcan Post
  • Business Times
  • industry publications
  • professional associations
  • universities
  • government websites
  • recognised Singapore directories

The objective isn’t to obtain 100 mentions.

It is to obtain meaningful, contextually relevant mentions.

A single credible article saying:

“Company X is a Singapore-based specialist in…”

can potentially be more useful than 50 generic directory listings.

Tier 4 — Experience and community

This is where Reddit still has a role.

But the strategy changes.

Don’t think:

“How can I create 20 Reddit mentions?”

Think:

“Where are people genuinely discussing the problem my client solves?”

If a company genuinely participates in the community, answers questions and provides useful information, Reddit can still contribute to the overall authority footprint.

The same principle applies to:

YouTube + TikTok + Instagram + Facebook + LinkedIn + XHS

The objective is not to manipulate the AI.

It is to create real-world evidence around the entity.

Why YouTube deserves more attention

YouTube is particularly interesting because it combines:

entity + topic + visual demonstration + transcript + engagement + Google ecosystem

For example, a Singapore restaurant could have:

Website: menu + location
Google: business information + reviews
YouTube: restaurant experience
Instagram: visual content
Reddit: customer discussion
Media: editorial coverage

Now an AI system encounters the restaurant from several independent directions.

That’s considerably stronger than trying to force one Reddit thread to rank.

What about traditional Singapore media?

This is where many GEO strategies become too simplistic.

A marketer might say:

“Reddit gets cited more than CNA, so Reddit is better.”

Not necessarily.

Citation frequency ≠ authority in every query.

If someone asks:

“What happened in Singapore’s latest Budget?”

a government source or CNA may be substantially more useful than Reddit.

If someone asks:

“What do Singaporeans think about this restaurant?”

Reddit may become more useful.

If someone asks:

“Which Singapore accounting firm should an SME hire?”

An industry publication, company website, reviews, LinkedIn and business directories could all contribute.

The query determines the evidence required.

That is one of the most important principles of GEO.

The new GEO model: citation diversity

The biggest lesson from the Reddit change is this:

Don’t optimise for one citation source.

Optimise for citation diversity.

Think of it as a portfolio.

SourceWhat it proves
WebsiteWhat you say about yourself
GoogleYou exist locally
GovernmentOfficial/regulated facts
MediaIndependent recognition
Industry publicationExpertise
YouTubeDemonstration
ReviewsCustomer experience
RedditCommunity discussion
LinkedInProfessional authority
Social mediaCurrent activity
Wikipedia/Wikidata where appropriateEntity information

The more consistently these sources describe the same entity, the easier it becomes for AI systems to construct a coherent answer.

What businesses should stop doing

The August 2026 Reddit development should make marketers rethink several GEO tactics.

❌ Stop treating Reddit as a shortcut

Reddit is not a guaranteed AI citation channel.

❌ Stop manufacturing conversations

Artificial Reddit mentions may create reputational problems and can undermine the very authenticity that made Reddit valuable in the first place.

❌ Stop measuring only backlinks

A backlink is not the same thing as an AI citation.

❌ Stop assuming Google ranking = AI visibility

There is overlap, but the systems are not identical.

❌ Stop creating content solely for keywords

AI engines increasingly need clear, extractable answers and entity context, not just keyword density.

What businesses should do instead

1. Build a strong entity

Make it immediately clear:

Who are you?
Where are you?
What do you specialise in?
Who do you serve?
Why should anyone trust you?

2. Create citation-ready content

Instead of:

“We are passionate about delivering innovative solutions…”

write:

“Company X is a Singapore-based SEO agency specialising in B2B SEO and AI search optimisation for SMEs.”

The second sentence gives an AI something concrete to understand.

3. Build independent corroboration

Get legitimate mentions from:

  • media
  • industry publications
  • associations
  • partners
  • customers
  • experts
  • review platforms

4. Diversify platforms

Use:

Website + Google + YouTube + LinkedIn + relevant social/community platforms + third-party media.

5. Monitor AI visibility continuously

Don’t test ChatGPT once and declare:

“We’re ranking in AI.”

AI visibility changes.

Track:

  • brand mentions
  • citation frequency
  • cited URLs
  • competitors
  • sentiment
  • query categories
  • source domains
  • changes by AI engine

Singapore GEO/AEO platforms are already developing dashboards around citation frequency, citation position and sentiment across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Copilot.

The most important update for marketers in August 2026 and onwards

The Reddit situation is important, but the 86% figure isn’t the real story.

The real story is this:

AI citation behaviour can change extremely quickly.

In March, Reddit could be described as the most-cited domain across major AI search engines based on a large dataset.

By mid-August, its share of ChatGPT Search citations had fallen dramatically.

That means any GEO strategy built around:

“Get onto website X and AI will cite you.”

is inherently fragile.

The future of GEO is much closer to digital authority management.

Final takeaway

For Singapore businesses, the goal shouldn’t be:

“How do I get ChatGPT to cite my Reddit post?”

It should be:

“How do I make my business the most credible, consistent and relevant answer to a Singapore-related question across the entire web?”

That requires a combination of:

SEO + entity optimisation + authoritative content + local search + digital PR + reviews + social proof + community presence + structured data + AI visibility monitoring.

Reddit can still be part of that ecosystem.

But after August 2026, I would never build a Singapore GEO strategy that depends on Reddit alone.

The smarter strategy is citation diversification: give AI multiple credible places to discover, verify and understand the same business.

That is much more resilient to the next algorithm or retrieval change.
